The Core Mission
Dr. Mark Thompson combines more than 30 years of hands-on clinical experience with an advanced background in business administration and physical rehabilitation. As a former American Animal Hospital Association president, award-winning practice owner, and published author, he has dedicated his career to building stronger veterinary teams through leadership, efficient systems, and a healthy workplace culture. Guided by his signature philosophy, “People helping people helping pets,” Dr. Thompson demonstrates that operational efficiency and deep empathy can seamlessly coexist to elevate patient care and improve staff well-being.
Current Projects
Building on his journey from a rural family farm to the highest echelons of national veterinary leadership, Dr. Thompson is the author of Redefining Veterinary Workplace Efficiency: Building Stronger Teams Through People, Process, and Purpose.
The book serves as a practical blueprint for modern veterinary teams, blending systems-driven workflow optimization with hard-earned leadership lessons. It provides actionable strategies to eliminate practice bottlenecks while keeping compassionate care at the absolute center of operations.
Clinical Innovation & Practice Milestones
Country Hills Pet Hospital (Eden, Wisconsin)
As the Owner and Medical Director of Country Hills Pet Hospital, Dr. Thompson transformed a traditional multi-doctor model into a highly productive, single-doctor practice leveraging innovative team-utilization systems. Under his leadership, the clinic has expanded access to advanced animal care while maximizing clinical productivity.
AAHA Practice of the Year: Dr. Thompson led the hospital to be named the national AAHA Accredited Practice of the Year Winner in 2018, following a finalist position in 2016.
Continuous Accreditation: Country Hills Pet Hospital has maintained continuous, rigorous AAHA accreditation since the year 2000.
Advanced Capability: Dr. Thompson has led Country Hills Pet Hospital’s introduction of cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities to the region, including advanced ultrasound, 3D CT imaging, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
National Leadership & Industry Contributions
Dr. Thompson’s dedication to elevating the veterinary profession extends from local community boards to national policymaking.
American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA)
National President (2023–2024): Dr. Thompson led the association as President and subsequently served as Immediate Past President (2024–2025), anchoring a total of seven years on the AAHA Board of Directors.
Industry Guidelines:
Co-authored the AAHA Veterinary Technician Utilization Guidelines (2023)
Served as a reviewer for the AAHA One Health Guidelines
Contributed directly to AAHA Psychological Health and Safety initiatives.
Committee Service: Dr. Thompson chaired the AAHA Awards and Recognition Committee for four years and participated extensively in AAHA's Leadership, Innovation, Networking, and Community initiatives.
State, Local, and Academic Advocacy
Organized Medicine: Dr. Thompson served two terms as President of a local veterinary medical association and held leadership positions within the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA).
Awards: Honored by his peers as the recipient of the WVMA Meritorious Service Award (2024) and the WVMA Team Award (2019).
Educational Leadership: Served on the advisory boards for both Moraine Park Technical College and Madison College Veterinary Technician Programs to champion the next generation of veterinary professionals.
Community Impact & Personal Foundation
Dr. Thompson’s career is deeply rooted in the values of hard work, humility, and compassion that he learned growing up on a small dairy farm in rural Wisconsin. These early lessons inspired a lifetime of community service, including providing dedicated veterinary support for regional humane societies and rescue organizations since 1997, serving four years on the Board of Directors of the Fond du Lac Humane Society, and supporting local police K-9 programs since 1993.
His family proudly shares this passion for service. His daughter, Courtney, a licensed social worker, directs Country Hills Pet Hospital’s pet loss and grief support program. His son, Sawyer, works as a Veterinary Assistant at the practice while completing his undergraduate degree in political science.
When he is not teaching, speaking, or practicing medicine, Dr. Thompson can be found writing and mentoring veterinary professionals to cultivate healthier, more sustainable clinical environments.
